PORTLAND -- After a run of 65 years, the renowned Catlin Gable Rummage Sale is ending its reign.
Organizers said the new age of online barter sites like Craigslist and the growing popularity of local consignment stores have slowly eroded their sales until reaching the point where they just can't meet their goals anymore. Money raised by the annual sale at the Portland Expo Center goes into the school's scholarship program which provides assistance to 28 percent of its 730 students in preschool through 12th grade.
“As much as we also love the rummage sale, external forces have steadily eroded our ability to put on a great sale and deliver the best benefits to the school and the Portland community. These include the advent of eBay and Craigslist, which have drawn high-value rummage away from us; the growth of discount retailers, second-hand, and consignment outlets; a shrinking pool of available volunteers; and ever-rising overhead costs,” said Nadine Fiedler, the Public Relations Director for Catlin Gabel School.
